Baxter College’s Young Chamber Council

Chamber Service: Education

School Name: Baxter College Young Chamber

Title: Baxter College’s Young Chamber Council

Date: September 2009

The Young Chamber scheme gives students the opportunity to voice their opinions, participate in enterprise activities and gain experience in and a knowledge of the world of work.

As the academic year drew to a close the Young Chamber councils at schools across Herefordshire and Worcestershire were working hard to complete projects and host events.

Baxter College’s Young Chamber Council discovered that their application to Funding for Lots of Stuff! (FLOSS) to support their community radio project had been succesful and were to be awarded £2000. FLOSS is different to other funding because it is ‘money for young people’ and it is young people who are in charge of coming up with ideas for how this is spent and it is young people who make all the decisions. The students have now worked to produce their first Purple FM‘ podcast.

Title: Baxter Young Chamber students go to University

Date: May 2009

The University of Worcester is part of a national network of universities that run The Student Placements for Entrepreneurs in Education (SPEED) and Enterprise Fellowship Scheme (EFS). They aim to encourage and support young entrepreneurs to develop their own businesses.

Eight pupils from Baxter College’s Young Chamber council visited the University of Worcester to meet with entrepreneurs who have set up their own businesses. The day was hosted by Andrew Corcoran, Knowledge Transfer Manager of the University of Worcester, and aimed to provide both the school and university students the opportunity to network and discuss their business ideas and experiences.

The student entrepreneurs were certainly impressed by the Young Chamber students, stating that:

“The Young Chamber members’ enthusiasm was infectious and I hope they gained some useful pointers when talking through my business ideas.” John Pearson, Pearini Design and Illustration.

"Speaking with the Young Chamber members was very inspirational as they were full of enthusiasm as well as happy to learn and get advice from the SPEED/EFS members." John Bajowa, Airlevator Magazine.

“During my conversations with the Young Chamber members I was really impressed by their inquisitive and adult approach to the business world.” Noel Vance, DeutscheParts.
